Hi. Over the last few days I gathered statistics about most of IPv4 servers in the pool. I measured offset (against my monitoring server) and stratum value.
Country and continent zone statistics and more info here: http://pastebin.com/raw/bPik3KGX Here are the global stats (2360 measured servers, I missed about 10%): +-----------+--------------+-----+ | offset | # of servers | % | +-----------+--------------+-----+ | <= 1 ms | 795 | 34% | | <= 2 ms | 1204 | 51% | | <= 5 ms | 1868 | 79% | | <= 10 ms | 2139 | 91% | | <= 20 ms | 2250 | 95% | | <= 50 ms | 2343 | 99% | +-----------+--------------+-----+ +-----------+--------------+-----+ | stratum | # of servers | % | +-----------+--------------+-----+ | 1 | 203 | 9% | | 2 | 1656 | 70% | | 3 | 476 | 20% | | 4 | 22 | 1% | +-----------+--------------+-----+ I did a similar test in 2012 (no country/continent zones, different monitoring server) and I'm reposting the old results for comparison: Out of 2348 servers: +-----------+--------------+-----+ | offset | # of servers | % | +-----------+--------------+-----+ | <= 1 ms | 1105 | 47% | | <= 2 ms | 1441 | 61% | | <= 5 ms | 1925 | 82% | | <= 10 ms | 2148 | 91% | | <= 25 ms | 2269 | 97% | | <= 50 ms | 2311 | 98% | | <= 100 ms | 2330 | 99% | +-----------+--------------+-----+ +-----------+--------------+-----+ | stratum | # of servers | % | +-----------+--------------+-----+ | 1 | 142 | 6% | | 2 | 1592 | 68% | | 3 | 578 | 25% | | 4 | 26 | 1% | +-----------+--------------+-----+ Out of 1044 servers: +-----------+--------------+-----+ | OS | # of servers | % | +-----------+--------------+-----+ | Linux | 658 | 63% | | BSD | 213 | 20% | | Windows | 30 | 3% | | SunOS | 25 | 2% | +-----------+--------------+-----+ It might be interesting to see if Ask's monitoring server in the US has similar numbers. Also this time I didn't even try to gather OS info, mode 6 packets are getting dropped by default ntpd conf (in most distributions?) and probably a lot of firewalls too.
