Paul, on the surface here, I think you make some sound advice.  And to 
be sure, I dumped my Softhome accounts long ago when I saw the writting 
on the wall.

Consider though, there is another POP3 service that we all use that 
does the very same thing and we are generally favorable to this 
service.  I speak of Yahoo Mail.  When we opt for POP3 access for 
Yahoo, Yahoo makes it clear that they will be sending us their "Yahoo! 
Delivers" opt-in commercial messages.   This was acceptable to me 
because I found these messages to be not too intrusive nor frequent and 
I found them to be easily filterable into the trash.  Today, I hardly 
ever see them.  

I used to think the service at Softhome was abysmal, too.  That had a 
lot to do with my decision to abandon about six or seven accounts I had 
with them.  I don't miss them any more.  

Softhome almost makes it a threat to you to pay for their service.  
Yahoo, on the other hand, gives you a friendly choice, but does not 
threaten you to pay or else get spammed.
