I had pretty much come to that conclusion today, myself.  I have 
reconfigured two of my mailandnews accounts for smtp authentication, 
but I have many more to do.

I can help anyone with Pegasus and MS Outlook Explorer configure their 
mail clients for this task, should anyone need help.  I will have to 
look at Eudora and see if this can be done, but I believe on the latest 
versions you can set smpt authentication.
