Okay, I just created two separate accounts. The first one I chose the
gmx.co.uk domain and the second one I chose the gmx.net domain.
You can have less than 9 chars in your username in either one.
I think maybe where you got tripped up was that point in the form where
it makes you type your new email address. So if your new address was:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
...then you type that full address into their sign up form. If you
just type the username, then it fusses at you that you have not entered
enough characters.

It will give you your pop and smpt settings immediately following
signup. However, you must type your full email address in your client
configuration as your username. They also assign you a user number of
sorts and possibly you can use that in your client configuration as
your username. I did not test that.
