i don't think listening to something makes you an elitist, the refusal to
listen to a type of music does.

i've been experiencing an interesting dilema lately. everyone i know that
listens to steely dan or phish refuses to listen to anything but those
bands, and i resent them because i think they are being too elitist. but at
the same time, i refuse to listen to those bands because i think they are
representative of a musical elite. this action makes me an elitist against
elitists.

perhaps this whole elitist thing is circular. what if fans of steely dan
don't listen to anything else becase people that don't listen to steely dan
are elitist against them?
