Not true--Napster has never made a dime. They have millions of dollars in venture
capital, but that is not the same as turning a profit. The founder, what's his name,
the 19 year old? He is not going to make a penny off this thing, but he will go down
in technology, intellectual property, and pop culture history, no matter what the
outcome of the court case.
I think everyone in this situation is screwy. RIAA exists to protect the interests of
the music industry, traditionally filled with too many pricey mouths to feed. Did
anyone read Courtney Love's speech that was reprinted in Salon?? She does a great job
of spelling out how record companies have been stealing money from musicians under the
good old-fashioned recording contract for a long time.
Napster is not interested at all in protecting the rights of the musicians, nor in
compensating them. There has to be some sort of middle ground--I think a subscription
service is not a bad alternative. I would pay $10/month to use Napster.
I think that the general public realizes that musicians should be compensated for
their work. I think people just need to be given the opportunity to do it.
