i was surprised that no one had anything to say about the cmj festival...is
this really the case? i went to a couple shows (the march, kindercore, and
merge, respectively; was turned away from the polyvinyl show for being
college age) and they got increasingly better--the march show was almost
unbearable, the kindercore night was excellent (despite pj harvey's decision
to play a more or less secret show and push the scheduled people back to one
a.m., forcing the labels bands, most of whom drove from athens georgia, to
play fifteen minute sets), and the merge showcase was brilliant. maybe i'm
biased--being from the south i found myself tapping my foot to most of paul
birch's ultra-country set--but the gimmick for most of the bands was so
obvious that i found it hard to get past my cynicism. i will not get into
specifics...anyway, did anybody else GO?!
