I'll just add one other note to this discussion - as more an FYI than anything else.
The ISO 32000 standard (aka ISO PDF) requires that a conforming reader perform the color management as described by Hal. As such, should Poppler wish to claim itself a "conforming ISO 32000 reader", it will need to do this work.
