Writing to a file needs memory. So having a file as swap can get into a loop
for claiming memory. ZFS and maybe geom encryption can amplify this effect even
more than UFS.
So, it is not so much about popularity. It is about known flaws. It works until it stops working.

By the way, is it unpopular these days to use mdconfig to use a normal regular
file as swap space?
However, despite the fact that I brought up the topic of that method, I have
never actually used it myself, so it seems that the method is unpopular :)
