I don't see why you couldn't do that. Keep your own ports tree and set
PORTSDIR_PATH in /etc/mk.conf accordingly for a first step. Then you
can have your own version of any ports.
The ports tools don't overwrite existing files, they issue a warning.
All this time, if I were factually wrong (and folks had been so tied up
in saying "you;'re wrong" instead of what's right) I would really find
that funny.
Look, I will try this again, I will re-install from scratch and see, I
never tried messing with PORTSDIR_PATH before.
