 rebuild boehm, then updated it.
This breaks w3m-image on i386:

bash-3.2$ w3m -v
w3m version w3m/0.5.1, options
lang=en,m17n,image,color,ansi-color,mouse,menu,cookie,ssl,ssl-verify,external-uri-loader,w3mmailer,nntp,ipv6,alarm,mark
bash-3.2$ sudo pkg_add -u boehm-gc
Candidates for updating boehm-gc-6.2p1 -> boehm-gc-7.0
Looking for updates: complete
Running the equivalent of pkg_add -r boehm-gc-7.0
...
bash-3.2$ w3m -v
w3m:/usr/local/lib/libgc.so.1.2: undefined symbol 'pthread_self'
lazy binding failed!
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Do I need to recompile the application too?
