I like your patch *much* better because it's the "right" way to deal with the problem, but my main concern was if such changes would ever make it upstream, or will we be stuck maintaining them? The whole dual tree nonsense, sylpheed versus sylpheed-claws (claws-mail), with the latter being for new features/experiments, seems to exist to take pressure off of the developer(s) of slypheed proper.
