A useful low-cost, modern solution is a dedicated virtual machine for building ports, which can then be served via http as packages to other systems. That's been working well for me, giving me complete flexibility while avoiding the need for all those messy support libraries on live systems. If you use snapshots or copies, then rolling back the build host to its original clean state after a complex build is trivial. Lather, rinse, repeat.
