It's part of a huge interdependent chain of dependencies which have to be handled in the right order (and probably some together), including notably ffmpeg, vlc, gstreamer, and flex. As far as I'm aware Brad, Antoine, Jasper and quite likely others have been working on various parts of this for quite some time.
