The manuals are rather normal mdoc(7) manuals, except that they are a bit messy with respect to whitespace. So i'd suggest to use the following patch in place of patch-doc_apcupsd_conf_5 and remove USE_GROFF. Of course, also send the patch upstream, explaining that .Dd must be the first macro, and blank lines confuse some mdoc(7) formatters. If the upstream authors are interested, we can also provide some more cleanup of the manuals (mostly from mandoc -Tlint complaints plus some more).
