This extension worked, tried it once for an epub-only version of an ebook: Firefox add-on EPUBReader [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/epubreader/] Thanks for the other suggestions (mupdf, ebook-tools), I'll try them out too (knew calibre yet find it a bit too heavy for simply checking epubs).
