I dont really understand *why* this diff would change anything, since on
macppc 'base-clang ports-gcc' should use gcc/g++ from ports, to my
understanding base-gcc is just here for archs where lang/gcc doesnt
build (if there are still some).

Have you checked which compiler is used with/without your diff ?
