Legendary fiddler Melvin Robinette died at his home in Tullahoma
TN on January 11. He was the last surviving member of the great string
band Dock Boggs put together in the 20's and 30's as they toured
Appalachia. He was a dedicated student of Fiddlin' Powers, and made some
superb records for the Gennett Company in the late 20's. His
masterpiece, which has been reprinted on several reissues, was "Last
Days in Georgia."
Robinette grew up in the Virginia-Tennessee border area, but
relocated to Tennessee later in life. He seldom played much in public
in later years, except for church performances, but did teach a lot of
the middle Tennessee fiddlers elements of his long bow technique. He was
in his mid-90's.
