I just picked up the Jimmy Donley "Crazy Cajun" collection and like it just
fine. Some good, early '60s swamp pop and R&B. His voice reminds me most
of Charlie Rich around that same time. Unlike the Sahm set for which the
liner notes are pretty poor, the Donley collection is fairly informative.
Mr. Donley was known more for his songwriting. Fats Domino recorded several
of his songs. Sadly, the man was a head case, boozer, and wife beater. Of
the 25 or so tracks on the disc, nearly all of them are credited to Huey
Meaux. As the liner notes state, Donley himself wrote all of the tunes, but
was in such bad financial straights and he sell his songs for whatever he
could get, whenever he could get it. Got mine from amazon.com.
