I don't have a radio and didn't hear this, but as a former NPR employee (production assistant), I'm reluctantly going to throw in some sort of defense. The interview technique that they teach and encourage involves asking what may sound like really stupid questions. I think it was Linda Wertheimer that told my beginning intern group that instead of asking complex questions that show how smart you are, ask really basic questions that will result in a clear, incisive answer showing how smart the interviewee is.
