Howdy,

As I've said previously, I pick the featured artist of the week, based
on what I'm currently enjoying in my own disc player at home.

Sometimes the audience goes for it, sometimes they scratch their heads
and begin to wonder if they can still catch Prairie Home Companion on
the other channel.

Actually, I doubt I ran people off with my choice this week, but the
phone was noticably quieter. Although one drunken caller (here's an
idea: Don't drink and dial...) did make it his mission to harass me
most of the night that I didn't play enough "classic country." I never
could tell if he thought I didn't play enough classic country on
Tennessee Saturday Night of if he was just upset that I'd shifted gears
and moved on to the Fringe. That being said, he didn't go for my
argument that John Wesley Harding's finely crafted little album
featured the ultimate in "classic" country-- centuries-old ballads
reworked by Nic Jones. (Or it could have been the Cheap Trick that set
him off...)

Eventually, I got a bit cranky and told him to quit calling me until he
was sober. That should keep him off the line for a year or two.

The rest of the audience, I presume, was enjoying the featured album in
quiet reflection...or gone fishing. Nonetheless, I enjoyed featuring
what I consider to be one of the finest albums released this year (to
date).

Artists making their Fringe debut included: Willie P. Bennett, Johnny
Carroll, Cheap Trick, Counting Crows, Damnations TX, The Eagles, Gary
Floyd, Hot Club of Cowtown, The Cornell Hurd Band, Jones and Leva, Roy
Kasten, Otis Redding, and Third Tyme Out.
