I think you're missing the point. You're suggesting that MTAs stuff 8 bit data down 7 bit datapaths, which I hope we agree is a non-starter. All EAI MTAs will support 8BITMIME, for which there's no need to recode message/global MIME parts. Many, perhaps most, 5321 MTAs also support 8BITMIME, for which there's also no need to recode them. The problem is when you have a dusty old MTA that isn't 8bit clean. You can't send unencoded UTF-8, the channel won't support it. So what else do you propose that they do? I suppose they could have called message/global something like application/hideous-chinese-mail, but that doesn't seem like it would fix anything. R's, John
