This could change, there is early stage work in the IETF "Using
TLS in Applications" (UTA) working group to re-introduce port 465
as the preferred MUA to MTA service:

    http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-uta-email-deep-00

whether that work gains IETF consensus and mail provider mind-share
remains to be seen.
