Thanks Regina. I want to stay with the Red Hat repo for now. My PostGIS tables
exist in the same database as a few other tables. If I use pg_dump to dump the
database, can I use the restoration utility from PostGIS to reload the
database? I tried dumping, upgrading to 8.4 and reloading on a test server
yesterday. It did not restore cleanly using pg_restore.

Brian,

First off -- is there a reason you are choosing to upgrade to PostgreSQL 8.4
instead of something newer like PostgreSQL 9.2.

The reason I ask is PostgreSQL 8.4 is going to reach EOL in a year time (July
2014) http://www.postgresql.org/support/versioning/
so in a year or so you'll probably want to upgrade again so you can keep
security patches up to date.

That said -- going from 8.1 to 9.2 is the same amount of work as going from 8.1
to 8.4, so you might as well go all the way or as far as you can since the
hardest part is the dump reload.

I also wouldn't bother with going to 1.5 since to go from 1.5 to 2 series
requires another dump reload. Go straight to 2.0 or 2.1 when it comes out
(which will be in a week or so) if you can.

If its because of the distribution you are using why limit yourself? I would
highly advice using the yum.postgresql.org repository:
http://yum.postgresql.org/ since they've got the latest PostgreSQL and PostGIS
that money can't buy and keep up with patches :)

Thanks,
Regina

Subject: [postgis-users] PostGIS 1.5 Upgrade Path
All,

It is my understanding that I will need to take the hard upgrade path since I
am currently using PostgreSQL 8.1 and PostGIS 1.3. Should I upgrade to PostGIS
1.5 first and then PostgreSQL 8.4? I am using Red Hat 5.8.

Thanks

Brian
