Thanks Regina. I want to stay with the Red Hat repo for now. My PostGIS tables exist in the same database as a few other tables. If I use pg_dump to dump the database, can I use the restoration utility from PostGIS to reload the database? I tried dumping, upgrading to 8.4 and reloading on a test server yesterday. It did not restore cleanly using pg_restore.

The reason I ask is PostgreSQL 8.4 is going to reach EOL in a year time (July 2014) http://www.postgresql.org/support/versioning/ so in a year or so you'll probably want to upgrade again so you can keep security patches up to date. That said -- going from 8.1 to 9.2 is the same amount of work as going from 8.1 to 8.4, so you might as well go all the way or as far as you can since the hardest part is the dump reload. I also wouldn't bother with going to 1.5 since to go from 1.5 to 2 series requires another dump reload. Go straight to 2.0 or 2.1 when it comes out (which will be in a week or so) if you can. If its because of the distribution you are using why limit yourself?
