Hi Brian,
I also answer (quite faster than in my previous mail) on this mailling list.

You could use any PostgreSQL version you want. For this, you just have to tell portage that you want ot use an *unstable* postgresql version as spécified also in the blog entry provided by Drew.

Ah Gentoo I love thee.

Check this blog entry Brian:
http://hasno.info/2008/7/31/upgrading-to-postgresql-8-3-on-gentoo

The gist of it being:

..largely due to the overall postgresql upgrade philosophy, which involves dumping (backing up) all your dbs and the restoring them after the upgrade. Since that isn't a seamless process, I'm sure they want an upgrade to be a conscious decision. That being said, the current upgrade path involves switching from the dev-db/ postgresql package to the dev-db/postgresql-base/dev-db/postgresql- serverpackages.

Hi
does anyone know of any problems with postgis in postgresql 8.1.11 ?
I'm using postgis 1.3.1 in postgresql 8.1.11

uname says:
Linux lead 2.6.24-gentoo-r4 #1 SMP Sat Apr 5 18:42:58 SAST 2008 i686
Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

The reason I ask is that Gentoo's package management system (portage)
wanted to downgrade postgres to 8.0.15...
I assume this is because postgis was tested by the gentoo maintainers
on postgres 8.0.15 only, but I'm a bit concerned that there may be
some problem they spotted in the 8.1 database.
Can anyone confirm that postgis 1.3.1 is actually totally stable in
postgresql 8.1.11 ?

Thanks
Brian
