Actually, unless I'm mistaken there isn't much reason not to move past 3.8.18+ as the only main changes have been the \ ' character change. If you didn't want that change...all you do is uncheck the "standard configuration" option, and set your use ' or \ as your escape in expression strings character to a solid check (which will use ' as the character) and everything should still work with old scripts and old syntaxes.
