I switched to the default.pcf and created a transparent background caption bar and it worked fine on my laptop. So started comparing configurations - default vs. pproconf.pcf. The Setup and Properties pages were the same. Then I started deleting caption lists. The first one I tried worked. I was able to have a transparent background caption bar. I re-imported the bar and tried to correct it. When I set it to "no skin", the caption bar background became transparent.
The *bar section of the skin had a "shape" for a background which had transparency (255 0 255). When I replaced it with a simpler shape, I had my bar and my transparent background caption bar. I don't know if the transparency of the shape affected things or if the shape was otherwise corrupted. I don't why, but it's working. Thanks to everyone for the kind attention.
