Bingo! Booted without the Wacom Intuos 3 tablet connected and now close-box 
actions work. I will have to investigate and see if there are services that can 
be sucessfully started and stopped. Simply unplugging it after booting did not 
help. I'd prefer to boot up with it, even though I don't use it very much.

This is a really old non-optical trackball. Only 3 buttons and a scroll wheel. 
Maybe some of the newer Logitechs have issues with Powerpro, but not this one.
