Did you try using the "last button sets active buttons" checkbox on active tab and make sure that, on the last button, multi-line is unchecked as well as setting width for active buttons. Possibly this will work. Or it might not. Bar painting code is part of the program where I do not normally fix bugs any more, because it is too likely that I will just break something else in the process.
