Thank you. setting the power level has fixed the problem! I am now running at 60 wakeups per second instead of 5000. :-)
I had to use the command shown on the lesswatts tips page: echo 5 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/iwl4965/*/power_level I thought I had tried this already and received an error message but this time it worked. Many Thanks. Felix
