Thanks Esver and you are right! However, I did download the Macintosh
User's Manual for the PowerBook 1400 series from Apple's web site. On
page 157, the manual says to remove the 5 screws and the diagram
shows 5 screws. I did that. Thought the thing was stuck as I didn't
realize there was a 6th because some tech person had put a voids
warranty sticker over the screw. So that's taken care of, I've got
the heat sink off and installed the ram. I also reconnected the
keyboard cable. Don't know how it pulled loose as it went back in
real tight. However, nothing happens when I try to boot up the thing.
I've gone back and reseated the keyboard cable several times and
checked other cables, still nothing. Is there a reset button
somewhere? Or should I just head over to my trusty mac tech who is
going to have a real laugh over this one...

I just read the part about the heatsink in the manual and there are
SIX screws you need to remove to get the heat sink out. I strongly
suggest you read this manual (starting on page 19 of the Take Apart
section - page 106 of the Adobe Acrobat document).
