Hi Geoff

Like Paul in Germany I am one of the 10% who have had problems with running
other OSs than 8.5 or 9.1 on a Sonnet G3 upgraded 1400. Also, according to
Sonnett: No RAM-doubler!

Anyway, I am very happy with the machine, it does everything fast.
including (to Kathryn looking for PCcards) with a LASAT 56k modem and a
Asante 10base ethernet card which I bought 2nd hand in Denmark for about
35$ each.

I have not had problems with the 64 m ram limit, but I might get it if I
move from OS 8.5 to 9.1. I (or rather the 9 year old wanting to play Diablo
2) sometimes need the spockets available from 8.6. On the other other hand,
maybe I will just ad these to the 8.5instead of upgrading. And, forDiablo
2, I will need more ram (128m). I am quite tempted bythe idea to buy flash
card PCMCIA cards from the local photo shop - plug it in, format it as a
harddisk and use it as virtual ram. HD virtual ram was NOT speeding up the
young one's Diablo 2 (on the 4400 desktop) before we added more of the real
thing.

And I should refer to the rich scources at www.insanely-great.com about
what and why for the various PB models. Thanks, Remy!

Geoff, I recommend you upgrade the 117 machine to end up with one G3 and
one 166 (with L2) instead of aG3 and the slow 117. It was not difficult to
tear the 166 card out.

Also thanks to the exciting episodes of exploring the internal electronic
jungles of the 540 - will there be a happy end?

>>I have a 1400 117 and a 166. I am going to put a G3 card in one of
them, saw a message that the 166 cpu was a little touchy when it came
to the Sonnett G3 card. Anyone had or heard of trouble with the 166
and the G3.
Thanks
Geoff
