I'm a little behind on reading my digests, and someone may have already pointed this out, but I've seen posts in which some folks are talking about upgrading a NiCd battery pack to a NiMH battery pack or even a Lithium ion battery... NiCd to NiMH usually works, depending on the charger, but not always. If the charger uses temperature rise as the terminating condition it will probably be OK, but if it looks for a voltage rise the NiMH will probably get overcharged, with resulting decreased life. Anecdotally, people often have success replacing one for the other if they do a simple timed charge... but if you forget and overcharge the battery dries out.
Lithium ion batteries are quite different... I can't say this strongly enough: don't attempt to retrofit Lithium batteries into a NiCd or NiMH charger situation. Remember Apple's difficulties with early lithium cells catching fire in Powerbooks? Lithiums use different charging strategies and different charging voltages than earlier battery chemistries. If you really want to learn all about batteries you should read Isidor Buchmann's book, "Batteries in a Portable World." You can find a link to it on the Cadex web site, www.cadex.com.
