The enabler is an extension that recognizes the particular Mac by its model gestalt ID number and allows the OS to operate with that specific model's ROM. (Among other things.) The newer generic (OEM) OS CDs have all previous Mac version enablers included and the installer automatically adds the required one. (I.E. a model brought out prior to OS 7.1 will have its enabler included in OS 7.1, but one brought out after 7.1 was released will not, but can be supported by 7.1 with the addition of the enabler.)
Apple Profiler under OS 9.x on my upgraded 1400 says "None" for active system enabler, even though it recognizes my Model Gestalt ID of 310. My Upgraded 8600, is recognized as Model Gestalt ID of 69, which according to GURU uses Enabler 702. Apple profiler also says that Active Enabler is None for this model. That makes me wonder if OS 9.x uses a different way to enable the Mac than earlier versions. Anyone? Have the Enablers been eliminated for newer models? If you are attempting to use a model specific install disk (I.E. using an iMac install disk on a PB) the CD will not have the required enabler. The Apple.com support area had all of them for download at one time, but I haven't looked lately. I'm told there are ways to hack a model specific OS installer to recognize other models, but I haven't tried them.
