In that case, he'll love the 1400. The keyboard on my iBook isn't bad at
all, but I have never encountered a better keyboard in a notebook than that
of my trusty old 1400.

As for Ethernet, you can try this link for an (outdated?) list of Mac
compatible Ethernet PCMCIA cards:

But personally, I'd go for a 3Com EtherLink card, they are in seemingly
endless supply on eBay, can be found dirt cheap, and work with a hacked
Farallon driver.
