This happens to my scanner all the time. The problem is that the power is probably on all the time and you have the scanner hooked up to a power hub (which is also on). If you turn the computer and the scanner off (which you can do only by unplugging the scanner--both USB and power) and then start the computer up and plug the scanner in, it should work. There's something it does when powering up.

Apologies to the list if this question is too far OT -- it's not a PB
problem at all, at least not with my non-USB-capable 5300.

After nearly a year of flawless performance my scanner (a Umax Astra 2100U)
has suddenly stopped working: it gives a "scanner failed to do calibration"
message whenever I attempt to preview or scan an image. The scanning head
(or whatever it's properly called) doesn't move across the length of the
scanner, but seems to hang up in its parked position. The USB connection
seems to be fine: the computer can see the scanner in the normal way, it
just doesn't work. Any chance of fixing it? The manual offers no help at
all.

Hope somebody can help, it's a very handy device and I miss it.

Best,
Victoria
