I thought so too.

You're saving the new
configuration and opening the TCP/IP control panel again to see if it's
been assigned an IP address?

I saved the settings, but it did not appear to assign an ip address.

However if it's coming from a dsl/cable router, then I'm somewhat at a
loss.

Yeah, its connected to the router, which ought to assign the address.

It's possible to set those up to restrict connections to a known pool
of hardware addresses, perhaps that's something to check, perhaps *it*
needs to be reset.

yep, checked that

You could try tossing the tcp/ip prefs and start over.

uh. how exactly do i go about doing that?

Are you certain (despite the lights) the ethernet card is functional,
and all the drivers are loaded?

i'm reasonably sure. it's not telling to eject the card due to the absence of the correct drivers, and it shows up on the desktop. i suppose i could ping it... uh. can you do that in mac os?

The dongles used with Ethernet cards are rather notorius for failing. One of the small wires inside breaks and renders it inoperative. One clue is whether or not you are getting link lights at BOTH ends of the cable.
