Just to close this thread in case someone notices later - Installed FreePPP 2.6 - problem fixed.
Interestingly enough it's 'auto modem init' option gives me a modem model - wonder if I can trust it.

Hi Again
I attempted to install the System Update 3.0 and Open Transport 1.11 on my PowerBook 160 OS 7.1
Everything appeared to go fine - but now that it's complete my MacPPP doesn't recognize my modem.
Clicking the OPEN button gets 'Checking for modem - PPP wait timeout - Waiting on 'OK'
The modem does click like it usually does when you start to use it.
A serial terminal emulation program I have still runs the modem just fine.
I note that an 8.1 machine that has a modem control panel....
but copying that over didn't help as there was no 'internal' modem option.
System 9.1 has all the 'remote access' stuff that isn't here either...
Suggestions before I throw away this work and go to my backups?
Brian
