Cleaning the drive is a good first step. Get a floppy cleaning kit (most office supply mega-stores have them, and I've still seen them at CompUSA). I'm sure you can get one in a comparable place in Australia.
TechTool Lite (the free one) has a floppy cleaning routine that does a good job. You can get it from

Older versions are still floating around on the Internet if you want a smaller download.
If this doesn't work, hit ebay and find one there. I'm sure you can do a tear down and try to rebuild it, but I haven't seen any instructions on doing so.
The 5300 floppy drive is the same as the 3400 floppy drive, FWIW, and IIRC.
