The Airport has a modem and it works great. We share it between 3 computers and for email, AIM, and minor surfing, it's hard to notice any slowdown as opposed to being one on one with the modem. Now, if someone is downloading a 1+ meg file, surfing gets choppy. My wife surfs and chats while I use it to pull/post files via ssh/cvs. Neither of us notice any ill affects.
ONE BIG ISSUE though is that unless you have an Airport able computer, you have to have an OS X machine to set up the airport. I could not do it from my 1400c or 7600 (booted in 9.1) I had to boot the 7600 into OS X or use my wife's iBook to configure it. Also, there isn't a way for the 1400 to dial up/hang up the modem except for the "auto dial when ip activity" thing is enabled. Whereas airport enabled computers can dial and hang up at will. -----Original Message----- From: Dan K <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sep 22, 2003 8:59 PM To: PowerBooks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wireless vicki d asked: >if i wanted to go wireless and stick a base station on the end of the phone >line instead of the desktop. My own 'basestation' is a cobbled together mess, a Siemens Speedstream wifi router (with modem port) and a PC-cabled 56K Viking monstrosity. Took a bit of work to get it to all work together let me tell you. Were I to do it all over I'd just buy an AP BS and be done with it. The only downside of the original AP BS is the one ethernet port. If you also have broadband and just want the dialup as a backup I think you have to do some sort of futzing. Isn't there an lucent/orininococo branded clone of the AP BS? I forget the model/brand/etc. but apparently it works just like the Apple dealy. hth, Dan K ................................. http://macdan.n3.net/ carracho://dankephoto.dhs.org:9700 hotline://dankephoto.dhs.org:9500 ................................. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
