Actually, IIRC, if you get the update, it is really the full installer.
Give it a try. Someone will holler if I'm wrong, I'm sure. I'm reasonably confident that is correct- I have the GV Platinum modem/ethernet card and can recall being worried about that same issue.

I tried the 3.0.2 and 3.0.6 alone and both didnt work.
I found 2.5.7 drivers from a friend, and then used 3.0.2 then 3.0.6, then the OS 9 update (you have to have this if running OS 9). Now it works.
