I have a 5300c that came with 8.6; I wanted 7.6.1 and a HD with two partitions. I used Apple's drive utility to create two partitions but accidentally made one HFS+ and didn't notice until I had 7.6.1 installed and got the "Where have all my files gone" deal. I installed 8.0 - same situation - then updated to 8.1, thinking I could at least use both partitions, but now the HFS+ doesn't even appear on the desktop.
It may be unrelated, but since installing 8.1 I get "no longer has a valid system folder; Text Encoding Converter is not in the extensions folder" when I try to shut down; I can shut down and restart anyway with no obvious problems.
Is there some way to get back the now-inaccessible HD space in the HFS+ partition? I seem to remember reading that HFS+ could not be undone - will wiping the drive and starting over do the job?

Chet
