Yes, I did consider this...I think I asked if there were ANY other 
possibilities in my original post.  If it's just a bad L2 cache, then 
fine...but if someone has figured out a workaround, I'd like to know.

Last night I read that someone used the XLR8 Mach Speed Control on his 1400, 
so  shelled out $10 to download it...and my system freezes everytime I try to 
open the control panel, with or without extensions disabled.

Any other comments?
