If I hold shipt-option-command-backspace while booting, it will not read the
cd, let alone boot from it. The question mark comes out instead. It bootes
from the hd when I release the keys.----------- That's wrong. Hold down the "C" key to boot from CD.
"C" doesnt work with the 1400.
It sounds like you have a progressive extension conflict. Try opening with extensions off. Boot with the shift key (only) down, then come back and report what happened.
