heating. While the 44MHz may work now it might crash at a higher
ambient air temperature.

Well of course thats the problem.

I have it runnin at 45.7mhz (275mhz) now since thursday it all works great
so far. Nice and speedy.

Here's a mod for you. Sounds gibberish now but if you have the machine open it'll make sense.

When I disassembled my 3400 I saw that the heatsink over the ethernet card (from the processor) almost (but not quite) mates with the thick metal strip on the back of the brightness/speaker bar above the keyboard. The two overlap but have a 0.5mm gap between them.

Hmm I thought, that looks JUST like it was meant to help get the heat away more . . . except that there's a little air gap and cable between the two (speaker cable???)

So a quick rerouting of the cable under the lower heatsink, and then a dollop of special silicon heat-tranfer compound (about 1 dollar from any electronics store) between the two plates.

Well, the processor heat sink definitely felt cooler, and the strip above the keyboard felt a little warmer. Also the machine stopped crashing (I was in the desert with air temps of 38 C, don't know what that is in F, but I can tell you its damn hot, body temp is 37 C)

I put a tiny smear of the goo on the processor itself too, as I had got the special heat-transfer rubber block a bit dusty when I had it apart.
(oops!)

You may also want to check the foam around the fan (mine was a bit unstuck) as it routes the air through under the trackpad, and clear the air vents in the bottom front edge, mine were clogged up with fluff n stuff.
