In the end I gave up. I never could find any encryption toggle and no software upgrades helped, nor did eliminating competitive PC slot extensions.
I can only figure it is some incompatibility with the router or who knows?
Anyway, all the router access point equipment is going away with my housemate and maybe me too soon, so I'm back to hardwire for now.
