Does your adapter work on your pb5300 without the flash card? Or the
*only* correct procedure is to insert the CF adapter with the flash in it.

Putting the adapter in without the CF installed makes no sense :)

Plus, on CF, the IDE controller is in the CF chip. That's why the adapter is $14. It's just wires. You don't put anything in, really, unless the CF itself is onboard.
Even putting a smartmedia adapter in without a SM card doesn't show anything on the desktop- the controller mustnot be awake.

And, if the PB is booted with a 1GB flash card (installed with, say -
MacOS9.1!) would be stable enough to work? any one tried this?

This has been covered a lot on the list, check the archives, and Dan has a section on LEM about doing this, somewhere.

I made a 64 meg "rescue CF disk" for my 5300 and 1400, boot to the CF and have speedtools, Norton etc. for use when I was without a working CD drive.
8.6 or 9.1, I forget, likely 9.1 (stripped down a little due to the size of card).

It's neat to have a working and completely quiet PB, not even the HD clicking.

Be sure to always eject them by dragging the ocon on the desktop to the trash.

What he said! But also remember that, unless you get one of the, say 24-32x rated CF cards, you may find the CF-drive is a little slow. This isn't terribly much of an issue w.r.t. writing files or running apps, but if you're going to put your VM swap file on there, you may not get the performance you expect. I never found it bad on my 3400, but it was noticeable. Of course, you're trading off a bit of speed for some longer battery time. You'd have to experiment with your own set up and see for yourself.
