If you are talking about the "PowerBook G3 Series" such as the 
"WallStreet"
it is most likely due to the poor type of label used. On the one I have,
one owned by my daughter at college, the serial number sticker is long 
gone. If you sit the thing on your lap, it get very warm. Thus your legs
sweat. The adhesive loosens. Off comes the label. Poor design.
