FWIW, I have a 165c 4Mb here running 7.5.3, VM "on" set at 12 Mb.
Shows an OS footprint of 2,337K .... 6,395K remaining.

I'm also wondering about the best OS for one of these old 030 Powerbooks.
I have a PB145 running 7.1, which I've been happy enough with; it
seems to have many useful and pretty features (more um, convenient I
guess, than System 6, which I've never installed on a PB), doesn't
have a huge footprint, and allows me to contact the outside via
email.
