64 MB is the max, barring some uncorroborated reports on hacks that would get you to 80 megs.
Actually, the memory controller can only address 64MB of RAM. It's the same as in the 5300, AFAIK, and both can accept 64+MB of RAM, but only 64MB will be used.

I realize that you're talking about physical ram, but what about RamDoubler? I've got it installed in my 5300 and the system profiler tells me that I have 56meg installed with 112meg available. Would that help his memory problem?
